Even as the fires were crackling through the branches of pines, birch and spruce; the start of new tree growth was already popping. The heat from the burning trees pops open the cones, releasing seeds that have been waiting to get loose for years. Millions of those seeds were dumped on the forest floor and within less than a month; a fraction of those seeds pop through the soil and start growing into little seedlings. In cases where seedlings are not being dispersed while a tree is burning; the tree begins to Fresh Growthregrow itself from the roots. The still-living plant tissue just below the surface and closest to sunlight is where the first leaves appear.  Fire is a natural part of the forest’s regeneration system.

Fresh Growth

After the Springs Fire on May 2, 2013, in the western Santa Monica Mountains in Ventura County, California, the scene was utter devastation: a black and white moonscape of ash and charred trees. Yet within a few weeks, tiny green shoots dotted the landscape at the base of every tree.  If you start regrowth today, fresh growth will be seen before we even get out of the month of January.
