Every spring we celebrate growth. Flowers bloom. Trees bud. Grass returns. The world seems to wake up overnight in a burst of color and life. But what we often forget is that long before the bloom there is a mess.
Seeds don’t grow by staying intact. They grow by breaking open. Beneath the surface of the soil—hidden from view—the seed cracks, splits, and sends fragile roots downward before anything green ever reaches toward the sun. It is not neat. It is not impressive. It is not visible. But it is necessary. And if we’re honest, most real growth in our lives happens in that same unseen place—the messy middle.
The Part No One Talks About
We tend to celebrate beginnings and endings. We love the excitement of a fresh start: the new job, the new goal, the new idea, the renewed sense of purpose. We also celebrate the finish line: the promotion, the achievement, the milestone reached. But the space in between? That’s where most of life actually happens. It’s the season where the excitement has faded, the outcome isn’t clear yet, and the work feels slower and heavier than we expected.
In the messy middle, we begin to wonder: Did I make the right decision? Why is this taking so long? Shouldn’t I be further along by now? This is the part of growth that rarely makes it onto social media highlight reels. But it is also where the deepest transformation happens.
Leaving My Dream Job
I remember a season in my own life that felt exactly like this. I had what I considered my dream job. I loved the work, the people, and the purpose behind it. Leaving was never part of my plan. Sometimes growth begins before we are ready to recognize it.
When I stepped away from that role and began building a coaching practice, I quickly discovered how much I didn’t know. I understood coaching deeply—but business ownership was an entirely new landscape. There were moments when the path felt exciting and moments when it felt uncertain. Progress was slower than I imagined.
Looking back now, I realize that season was growing roots. The messy middle was building the strength that the future work would require.
Roots Before Results
Nature gives us a quiet reminder every spring. Before anything beautiful appears above the ground, something important is happening below it. Roots are growing. Roots provide stability. Roots gather nutrients. Roots anchor the future growth of the plant. Without strong roots, growth above the surface cannot be sustained.
The same is true in our lives. Sometimes the season we’re in is not about visible progress. It’s about developing the inner strength that will support what comes next. The messy middle may be growing things in you that no one else can see yet: Patience. Clarity. Confidence. Wisdom. Resilience. These are the roots of meaningful growth.
When Growth Feels Uncomfortable
There is another truth about growth that spring quietly reveals. Growth is not always comfortable. A seed must break open. Branches must stretch. Old leaves must fall away to make room for new ones.
In our lives, growth often looks like letting go of roles that once defined us; trying something new that stretches our confidence; rebuilding after a disappointment; learning to say no; choosing courage even when fear is present. These moments rarely feel polished or predictable. But they are often the very moments that move us forward.
The Middle Is Where Strength Is Built
If you are in a messy middle right now, it may feel like nothing is happening. Progress might feel slow. Uncertainty might feel heavy. The future might still be forming. But just like the seed beneath the soil, growth is often happening in ways you cannot fully see yet.
What feels like stagnation may actually be preparation. What feels like confusion may actually be clarity forming. What feels like a long middle may actually be the foundation for something meaningful. Spring reminds us that growth is rarely instant. It unfolds in quiet stages.
Trust the Season You’re In
Spring reminds us of something we often forget in our own lives: growth rarely happens in the spotlight. It begins quietly, beneath the surface, in the breaking open and the stretching that no one else can see. If you find yourself in a messy middle right now, take heart. The work happening in this season may be deeper than you realize. Roots are forming. Strength is developing. And just like the seeds beneath the soil, the growth that feels invisible today may one day become the very thing that blooms.
