“Connecting with others is rewarding; it makes us feel like we’re not alone in the world” ~Jonah Berger
In our current lives where connection is often in the form of likes on a post or the number of followers you have, it is necessary to disconnect online and examine how we form positive connections in our real lives. Often, we treat money and influence as modern-day status symbols. And as we strive for these, it is easy to get lost prioritizing societal ideals over our relationships with others. Sometimes it’s important to work on your awareness of the current connections around you and appreciate what they bring to your life.
Seeking Connection
The reality is we seek connections and support throughout our lives. We are only human and to be human means connections with each other and community. This starts early on in childhood where we bond with our parents and caregivers. Once we start school, we learn what it means to open our circles up and create friendships with peers or teachers. And as we age, we continue to seek new connections with others, whether romantic, platonic, pragmatic, etc.
Social connection is hard-wired into human nature for our need to belong to a group or “tribe”. Without relationships or companionship our mental and physical health suffers. Connections are important in all aspects of life as feelings of loneliness and isolation can prevent healthy living. Though work is often a space for professionalism and productivity, workplace relationships remain key to a successful business. Positive connections foster knowledge sharing, innovation, and increased performance. We feel like we belong to the group by forming constructive connections. Imagine trying to get work done when you feel underappreciated, overworked, and burnt out. You may suffer the consequences of poor mental health and perhaps even your job!
Not all connections are the same.
You may feel like you instantly click with certain people, while others remain on an acquaintance level. If a friendship is not working out, do not force it. The people that are meant to be in your life will stay in your life.
When I was a young woman learning to navigate relationships, my mother gave me knowledge that has stuck with me. She said people will either enter your life for a reason, a season, or a lifetime. Sometimes a short-lived relationship is formed from a specific situation or benefit. Like if a coworker lends you a hand for a big project you’re working on because you helped them with theirs. Other people come in for a season, bringing growth and happiness through a period of your life. Maybe you’re switching jobs, but your boss still gave you the lessons that set your foundation of your career. Other connections are for your lifetime. These are the ones which change as you go through many stages in your life. Not every relationship is a lifetime one, and they do not have to be.
Mindset
Your relationship with money shapes far more than just your bank account—it influences your mindset, daily choices, and even your relationships. Whether you operate from a mindset of abundance or scarcity can deeply affect your lifestyle and sense of well-being. Financial stability may reflect success and often serves as a status symbol, but the pursuit of wealth shouldn’t come at the cost of meaningful connection. Learning to budget wisely and manage your finances with intention can lead to greater independence. At The Diamond Group Wealth Advisors, we believe that when you truly understand your financial picture through Your Financial House, you’re empowered to make confident decisions and focus more on the people and passions that matter most in your life.
Use money as a tool to build a meaningful life, not as a measure of your worth. True connection isn’t about the number of followers or friends you have, but about how many people truly understand and support your heart.
Connecting deeper in relationships through intentional actions and openness, when love and respect are the foundation, will thrive.
So, what kind of connection will you choose to create today?
