When we speak of legacies, our minds might conjure images of grand philanthropic efforts or significant financial inheritances. However, for many women, the most enduring legacy we can leave is the impact we have on the lives of others, particularly the next generation of women. It’s not just about what we leave behind, but how we choose to guide, support, and inspire those who follow in our footsteps.
Be a Mentor
One of the most powerful ways to invest in the future is through mentorship. Most of you know I’ve raised sons, having a granddaughter is a novel experience for me. At Christmas, she, at only three years old, donned her necklace, bracelet, and purse, and announced, “I’m so beautiful.” Her confidence and clarity were palpable, standing in stark contrast to the insecurity many women feel due to our culture. I am determined to be part of creating a world that helps this little girl—and many like her—maintain their confidence as they grow.
Create Opportunities
Whether you are in a position of leadership within a company, run your own business, or are part of a community network, you have the power to create opportunities for others. This could be as simple as offering internships, recommending someone for a project, or supporting women-owned businesses. Each act of support builds a foundation for others to rise and, in turn, do the same for the next generation.
Lead by Example
Your life is a lesson to those who observe it. I’ve had the privilege of being mentored by some amazing women, one of whom imparted so much to me by simply letting me be part of her life. She never tried to teach, instruct, demand, or command; she just lived in front of me. That exposure to how she did life has been life-changing for me. It taught me that leading by example is not about being perfect but about being genuine and consistent.
Invest in Community
Legacy is also about the community we build and nourish. Investing in community involves supporting networks that help women connect, share, and grow together. Whether it’s through leading a local networking group, participating in charity events, or simply fostering a spirit of collaboration in your surroundings, these communities become support systems that can uplift entire generations.
Encourage Innovation and Courage
Encourage those coming after you to think innovatively and take risks. It’s so easy for us to think the way we are doing it or the way we learned to do it is the best way. Breaking new ground often requires courage to step out of comfort zones. By cheering on the risk-takers and supporting innovative ideas, we help cultivate a culture where progress is possible and new leaders can emerge. I like to ask women, “What did you do today that scared you?”
Reflect and Share Your Story
Our journey has lessons that can benefit others. By reflecting on our path and sharing our stories, we help others see the possibilities in their own lives. It takes courage on our part to be that vulnerable with others. As a result, our challenges, failures, and triumphs make our narrative relatable and motivational. Consider sharing your story this year.
Leaving a legacy is about planting seeds that will grow long after we are gone. It’s about intentional actions that foster growth, resilience, and empowerment in the next generation. Each of us has the potential to make a lasting impact—it starts with a commitment to live intentionally and invest in the lives of others.
