Relax and calm down, you deserve this break.

When you try to control everything, you enjoy nothing. Set time aside to relax and enjoy the benefits.

Life presents many stressors—new projects at work, car troubles, novel illnesses—that pile up on your everyday. When you are stressed, your body releases cortisol which is a hormone that prepares your fight-or- flight response. Elevated levels of cortisol will only lead to negative effects like weight gain, mood swings, and high blood pressure. At the same time, your happy hormones (dopamine/serotonin) decrease. If you feel stressed and irritable at the end of a tough week, this is why.

Luckily, relaxation counteracts these effects and mitigates your anger and frustration. It is up to you to find time in your everyday life to relax. You don’t need buckets of time, just five minutes to help refresh your mind. Try deep breathing or guided imagery between meetings to declutter your thoughts. If you have a free day, go to your favorite café and buy a treat. Free weekend, go to the beach! Grab a pair of flipflops and enjoy the sun. Or snatch a blanket and opt for a power nap; whatever you take joy in.

With spring break quickly approaching, take a break from work and relax. Stop trying to control every aspect of your life and catch your breath. You do enough, you have enough, and you are enough so take that well-deserved break. Enjoy the life you’re working towards.
